​What is ACC Dual Credit?

Texas students are able to get a jump start on college by taking classes through Austin Community College (ACC) while still in high school.   Although the program is called Dual Credit, students are also able to take classes that are for college credit only.

•    Dual Credit is credit that counts for both high school credit and college credit. Examples of this are ENGL 1301/1302 which also counts for AHS English IV, and GOVT 2305 which also counts for AHS US Government.

•    Co-enrollment is credit that counts for college credit only. An example of this is Texas State and Local Government.

​(Students are also able to receive articulated credit, which is only recognized at ACC (i.e. BIM classes, Graphic Design, etc.  Articulated credit is handled by the teachers of the class, not by the College and Career Center).

Where and when do students take classes?​​

Students can begin taking ACC classes as a freshman in high school (as long as they are college ready via TSI or other test exemption). Students are able to take ACC classes at Anderson, at any ACC campus, or online through ACC’s distance learning program. 

How much do ACC classes cost?​ 

There is not a tuition charge for the first 12 classes; however, students are required to buy their books and supplies and pay any course fees.  Any classes taken beyond 12 will be assessed the regular ACC fee.

What are the requirements to take ACC classes?

In order to take classes, students must show that they are college ready.  Students take the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) test or qualify for an exemption.  (printable form available HERE)

TSI Exemption Requirements:

ACT: Composite 23 and 19 English and 19 Math

If taken after Feb 2023:

40+ English & Reading (E&R) and 22+ Math (M) - NO composite score requirement

SAT:  480 CR and 530 Math

PSAT: 460+ RW and 510 Math

College Readiness Waivers, while in high school:

STAAR: English II (combined reading & writing test) scaled score of 4000+

STAAR: Algebra I scaled score of 4000+ and completion of high school Algebra II with a 70 or higher

TSI Test:

If you do not qualify with one of the exemptions above, you can take the TSI test.  The TSI test consists of 3 sections (reading, writing, and math).  You only need to take and pass the sections pertaining to the courses you are taking (ex: reading and writing for College Success, English, US History, and Government.  Math and reading/writing scores are required for for math-based courses like College Algebra, Economics, Precalculus and Sciences.  

Required minimum scores are:

Math:

     CRC 950-990 OR

​     CRC 910-949 AND Diagnostic level 6

ELAR (English Language Arts & Reading):

     CRC 945-990 AND Essay 5-8 OR 

     CRC 910-944 AND Diagnostic level 5-6 AND Essay 5-8

TSI Tests taken prior to January 2021:

351+ Reading (R)   

340+ & 4 Writing (W) OR

<340 & 5 Writing (W) & 4+ ABE Diagnostic

350+ Math (M)

You can take the TSI test at any ACC campus for a $10 per section fee.  

Anderson will also offer pre-arranged times to take the TSI test for no cost.

Do Dual Credit classes transfer?​

Yes!  If you are attending a state school in Texas, you can click here for the equivalency guide.

Most public schools outside of Texas and most private schools also accept dual credit classes.  Please refer to the individual school's website to find out if and how the credits will transfer.

The below programs offer an in-depth study of the topic areas, and students earn a certificate upon completion which qualifies for employment in certain industries.  Some courses required are taught at Anderson, and some require students to attend courses at ACC campuses.  Click on the links for more information.
